„Cosmic Encounters“

„Cosmic Encounters“

a 55 minute 3D documentary directed by Jürgen Hansen and Simone Stripp

Camera: Matthias Bolliger   Editor: Frédéric Frankel

The 52-minute documentary is produced for ARTE and ZDF by Prospect TV Production, Jürgen Hansen and Simone Stripp. “Cosmic Encounters” („Begegnung im All“) is a TV world premiere – the first TV documentary worldwide with 3D images from the international space station ISS.

“Cosmic Encounters” relates one of mankind’s oldest dreams: to leave our planet behind and explore outer space – a dream that still fires the imagination of countless human beings to this day. “Encounter in Outer Space” takes the viewer on a journey into the fascinating world of space travel, with images of breathtaking beauty.

The film accompanies the Dutch ESA astronaut André Kuipers during his current mission on board the ISS. We observe the astronauts’ everyday life in weightlessness, which is abruptly interrupted by an unforeseen event – a situation which the ground control and the astronauts must react to. On earth, the young German astronaut Alexander Gerst, who was selected from more than 8000 candidates, is also getting ready for his mission to the ISS in May 2014. The film team spends several months accompanying him in his highly demanding training.

“Cosmic Encounters” takes the viewer to the mythical places of space travel, for example to NASA’s Johnson Space Center, to Houston or to the “Star Town” near Moscow, the legendary center of Soviet and Russian space programs. The film is not a purely scientific documentary, but follows the two protagonists André Kuipers and Alexander Gerst in their adventures and challenges which address a broad public.

This 3D documentary is an homage to generations of scientists, technicians and visionaries who have succeeded in making one of mankind’s oldest dreams come true and enabled the conquest of outer space. 3D also makes it possible to give the viewer the illusion of being in the midst of the action and of experiencing the events almost as if one were really there – a one-of-a-kind feeling. Up to now, excursions into outer space have only been undertaken by a few astronauts, cosmonauts and billionaires who could afford the 20-million-dollar fee for 10 days on board the ISS.

The return of the Wolves

How they changed Yellowstone National Park

directed by Jürgen Hansen & Simone Stripp

(52 & 43 minutes)

Over centuries man hunted and killed wolves as merciless and indiscriminate killers. They were brought to near extinction in most parts of the wild, where they used to be on the top of the food chain. Yellowstone, the first national park in the world, was no exception. Man, created and protected this wilderness to what his idealized perfect natural paradise should look like. Yet, there was no place for wolves and in 1926 the last of the wolves were killed.

Now, instead of having created the perfect wilderness, Yellowstone was thrown in peril. Without the top predator, the elk population exploded and grazing reduced the small vegetation throughout the park dramatically.

70 years later, in 1995, Yellowstone National Park reintroduced wolves from Canada back into the park and within a couple of years, a robust wolf population flourished, doing, what wolves are used to doing, hunting and killing their main prey, elk.

It turned out, that the reintroduction of wolves became a blessing for Yellowstone. Less elk meant less grazing, vegetation recovered, providing new habitat for other species. Wolves brought Yellowstone back into a balance.

Over centuries man hunted and killed wolves as merciless and indiscriminate killers. They were brought to near extinction in most parts of the wild, where they used to be on the top of the food chain. Yellowstone, the first national park in the world, was no exception. Man created and protected this wilderness to what his idealized perfect natural paradise should look like. Yet, there was no place for wolves and in 1926 the last wolves were killed.

Now, instead of having created the perfect wilderness, Yellowstone was thrown in peril. Without the top predator, the elk population exploded and grazing reduced the small vegetation throughout the park dramatically. Attempts to cull the elk by the National Park Service to reduce its population was met with public outcry.

Scientists have given this the name of a “trophic cascade”. The story could be simple and end like that: Bringing back the formerly extinct top predator and nature gets back on track.

But this end is only the beginning. The reality is much more complex. With the reintroduction of the wolves, the Yellowstone ecosystem changed. But natures response to man’s latest obtrusion is not as simple as a domino effect triggered by the wolf from top to the bottom of the food chain.

The big question remains: How does a trophic cascade work?

“Yellowstone – The secret of the wolves” takes the audience on an adventurous journey inside one of the most remarkable wildlife reintroduction stories in the world.

What seems to be a perfect success story, a lovely tale encouraged by wolf advocates, scientists and media, is a complex and interwoven ecological process which scientists are only just beginning to understand. A fascinating stream of ecosystem responses, playing out in one of the world’s most pristine National Parks.

A 52 minute BlueChip version „Yellowstone - Wolves - The renewal of Nature“ is also available.

„The return of the bears“

a 52 minute Science/Nature documentary about the reintroduction of brown bears in Europe

Directed by Jürgen Hansen & Simone Stripp

Camera: Jürgen Hansen, Christina Sonvilla, Marc Graf

Produced for ZDF/Arte © 2020                                                       World-wide distribution: ZDF Studios

For centuries, bears were hunted and exterminated in large parts of Europe. Now they are being reintroduced in the French and Spanish Pyrenees, but also in northern Italy. An EU initiative has set itself the goal of reintroducing bears to their former habitats. But their return is not without problems. Animal breeders fear for their animals, bears cause damage, raid beehives and attack hikers, albeit very rarely. Resistance is growing, especially in the French Pyrenees.

The documentary goes on the trail with Europe's leading bear scientists and shows how in countries where bears were never extinct, such as Romania and Slovenia, people have learned over centuries to share the land with them. It explores the consequences of their reintroduction for the ecosystem and how they can be effectively protected from their biggest enemy, us humans.

The Pyrenees stretch for almost 400 kilometres between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. The massive mountain range is also the border between Spain and France, and at its heart lies Andorra, one of the smallest states in Europe.

The documentary "The Wild Beauty of the Pyrenees" takes viewers on a journey through the French Pyrenees. From the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, it goes over steep mountain massifs into secluded valleys with rushing waterfalls, where people live an original life in close connection with wild nature.

The film follows six protagonists over the course of a year. Winter, spring, summer and autumn characterise the pristine mountain landscape of the Pyrenees as much as the fauna and flora. Just as the seasons change the landscape, they also pose many challenges to people's lives.

Directed by René Araneda, John Ansotegui

                                                                                                        Weltweiter Vertrieb: Off the Fence

The Humboldt Current is the most species-rich marine ecosystem in the world. The reason for this is the cold, nutrient-rich water masses that flow from the extreme south of Chile up to the equator. This unique natural wealth is transported by storms that carry minerals from the Atacama Desert into the coastal waters of the South Pacific and by the massive glaciers in southern Patagonia that carry mineral-rich rock into the rivers and thus into the Humboldt Current.

The 3-part nature documentary takes the viewer on a journey into the most biodiverse and spectacular marine ecosystem in the world. The Humboldt Current stretches over a width of up to 1000 kilometres from the south of Chile to the equator along the west coast of South America, transporting cold, nutrient-rich water northwards. The basis for a unique and diverse ecosystem.

PREMIERE ON JUNE 8, 2023 AT 8:15 PM ON NDR GERMAN TELEVISION

Northern Chile is a region of extremes. With the Atacama, one of the driest and oldest deserts on earth shapes a large part of the landscape between the Andes and the Pacific. The 6,500-metre-high volcanoes of the Andes chain tower majestically over the Altiplano, the highlands over 4,000 metres high, with spectacular salt lakes and a desert landscape reminiscent of the Moon and Mars.

A land of contrasts, the mighty Humboldt Current flows off the coast of Chile, its cold waters providing a fascinating wealth of marine ecosystems. Huge fin whales migrate here along the deserted coast.

The documentary takes viewers on a journey to people for whom this unique landscape is their home.

„The giant bears of Alaska“

Grizzly bears in Alaska are adapting to a changing environment. This documentary shows how the world’s largest brown bears on Kodiak Island and in the world famous Katmai National Park are the main protagonists of a fascinating interaction in a complex ecosystem. Their survival is depending significantly on the abundance and diversity of wild salmon, their main food source. Climate change is disrupting an equilibrium that has existed for thousands of years. Grizzlies in other parts of Alaska are also adapting to more and more changes in their environment. Meanwhile scientists in Wood-Tikchik State Park are observing the largest salmon run in history.

Focusing on the life of several bear families the film shows, how Grizzlies are adapting to these new challenges.
